Sequestered Solutions Alaska
The Four Bottom Lines
Traditional
Use of Sequestered Solutions Alaska, LLC’s (SSA’s) Anchorage Hosting Facility (ANCHF) offers SSA’s clients significant economic advantages over other alternatives. SSA can provide outstanding service at a lower cost because of the economic advantages SSA provides – advantages that Alaska provides to our business. Our data-storage rates are typically 40-50% lower than comparable services in warmer climates. Combining the lower cost of electrical power in Anchorage with the lessened need for mechanical cooling of the equipment allows SSA to have a definite economic advantage over our lower-48 competition. While less critical than the cost of power (and the additional power needed for cooling,) the remaining support costs (people, equipment, etc.) are no more expensive than our competitors’ costs. Also, because of our “Lights Out” mode of operation, clients can manage their servers from wherever they happen to be, anywhere in the modern world, thus saving transportation costs and time.
Environmental
SSA’s operation is environment-friendly for a number of reasons. First, we simply use substantially less power to cool equipment, so we use less power, overall. Typically, one plans to use as much power to cool electronic equipment as one uses run that equipment. With the cool environment in Alaska, SSA can, as an annual average, use less than five percent of the operational power for cooling. In addition, ground water in Alaska is abundant and cold. This water can be used directly for cooling equipment, when the outside air is not cold enough. This approach dramatically lessens the capital cost for refrigeration machinery and thereby lessens the environmental load on the facility even more. SSA’s power is available from a nearby hydroelectric plant, so our power usage – already low to begin with – comes from a renewable and non-polluting source.
Social
SSA is part of Alaska’s economic development program, and contributes significantly to the sustainable diversification of Alaska’s economy. We provide jobs that are high-tech, non-seasonal, non-extractive, essentially non-polluting, diverse, and geographically insensitive jobs. We work with several Alaska Native organizations, and our ability to provide jobs throughout the Alaska bush is a significant part of our interactions with these organizations.
Security
The ANCHF is located in highly secure facility (24/7 guard, exceeds Homeland Security requirements, security cameras, card-key access, key and combination-lock access to racks, etc.), is remotely located, and employs state of the art, National-Security-Community-developed security technologies and practices. SSA’s staff has extensive experience in protecting National-Security information, financial information, personal information, and health-care information. We have people who are experienced in protecting these kinds of information in essentially all areas of deployment – from highly secure, US Government systems to web-based commercial platforms. Our people are particularly good at protecting systems because of their experience both in protecting systems and in attacking them.
